I'm replacing 4 1n5408 diodes in my tube amp with some IR HEXFREDs. The 1n5408s are 1000V/3A. It seems to me that the IR 1200V/8A will do fine, but I notice that some distributors are recommending the 1200V/16A (or even 30A) for power amps. Isn't the 16A version overkill if I'm replacing 3A diodes? Am I missing something about HEXFRED specs? Also, do I need to heat sink these guys?
Thanks,
LRC
