If you strip it, then refinish it with automotive acrylic enamel paint WITH the proper primer. Note that while this paint dries in a few hours it isn't fully hardened for about 30 days - enamels cure by absorption of oxygen from the air which takes time. So you'll have to set the unit aside for a while. But be patient or you'll damage the new finish.Follow the instructions that come with the paint. The "plasti-kote" brand works quite well, BTW.
When you are done you'll have a much better finish than you can get with "hobby" paints. And it will take the tranny heat - feel the temp of a car finish on a hot sunny day and you'll know the heat is no problem.
