Polished granite looks good in some design schemes, even if it is not the best material for sonic performance. Rough-cut sandstone can be very handsome in other designs. A piece of Corian cut and polished might also work aesthetically. As Barry said, better use of the damping properties of sand comes from a thin, rigid top plate without its own resonance problems. A sheet of anodized aluminum or brushed stainless steel backed with Dynamat Xtreme, as long as the point load of the turntable feet is not enough to dimple it, might give better performance and still look good.
