I think soil would be too dense to make a good absorber and would effectively close the pipe. You probably wouldn't miss a great deal in the way of absorption, but I wouldn't like to try planting anything in the soil. You're going to have to water plants, watering a soil column the height of the tubes and with relatively minimal diameter isn't going to be easy. If you leave the bottom open to some extent for drainage, you're going to have to deal with water and soil mess below the pipes and if you don't leave some drainage facility, things are going to get messy inside the pipes in other ways. There's a big potential for cultivation of moulds and smells, plus possibly even some health nasties.

Some people have used lenses behind Maggies to diffuse the back wave and seem happy with the results. I haven't heard them. My one concern would be that it's going to change the distribution pattern of the Maggies to something much wider at the back and that will change the way they load the room. The surfaces behind the lenses will also be critical in determining what happens. You may or may not like the results.
