Bill,I have wondered the same thing everytime I embark on another amplifier project. The more I do this, the more respect I have for the top designers. They must blend the sonic signatures of numerous parts to end up with the desired combination of transparency, coloration, extension, etc. I imagine that they also learn where the part sound has the greatest influence, where their sound is less critical, and which topologies are more or less sensitive to part sound influence.
Has there ever been an attempt here or elsewhere to make a database that inmates could contribute to? Many of the parts have such a distinctive sound that, even with inevitable differences in experience/opinion, a concensus would emerge.
Just to add to your list, I have found the type of wire for even short runs to make a clearly audible difference. For resistors, Mills are neutral but soft, and Daytons are rather bright and analytical.
Best regards,
Bob
