Two quick rollerblock construction questions...

I am building a set of rollerblocks to try them. The ones I am building are very similar to the symposium rollerblocks except I am using oak wood as the base of the rollerblock. I am first going to try stainless steel balls (.81 cents each at Ace Hardware), if I like the rollerballs I will get some tungsten balls. I have all the parts, I am just not sure about one part of the construction. Here is where I am stumped:

The cutout on the base is a teensy bit larger then the spherical plate. So I will not only need to adhere the two pieces together, but will also need to fill in the small gaps between the plate and wood block. My question is: What is the recommended filler/glue used to adhere the spherical polished plate (the one the ball sits on) to the base?

I was thinking of using Liquid Nails, any other suggestions? Common sense tells me the filler/glue should be hard when dried, is this assumption correct? Thanks in advance!
