I am surprised that the sand bag on the crystal did not help more. You did use a large enough bag of it, and tuck it in around the crystal per the note?My own experiences with the harder blue style blue-tak have not been that good, it doesn't seem to help as much as the sand did. However, what you describe sounds like what someone else once called 'foamed putty', he said it was real airy and light, and seemed to compress down to nothing when squeezed hard. Does this sound like what you used?
It helps to keep in mind that every CD player will be using a different brand of crystal, and perhaps even a different 'cut' on the crystal, ands o they will all react slightly differently to vibration damping.
Sounds like your PCB was not firmly held in place, and so using a wad of putty between it and the chassis would do more good than harm.
