The idea is to dampen vibrations right at the crystal, so as to avoid as much piezoelectric effect as possible. If we can prevent he crystal from generating it's own interference, we can reduce jitter.Obviously, if the mass changes, the resonant frequency will change, but it would be much more desirable to eliminate or reduce the resonance in the first place.
