Re: When you are tweaking, how do you distinguish "AIR" from brightness and hyper detail?

This is a very subjective matter. The bottom line is what you want your system to sound like. Once you get beyond a certain level of detail in you system any of the subtle sound qualities like "air" are more of a subconscious phenomenon, i.e. you don't notice it in the first 5 minutes of listening, but after 3-4 hours, you realize that you're drawn into the music in ways that you weren't before. Another good way to test this is to leave the stereo on at a background level in a room and do some work of some sort nearby.

As you get more "air" or "transparency" in your music, you'll hear more detail and yet at the same time find the sound of the system more alluring. As you get more brightness and hyper-detail, you'll find it will start to grate on your ears, though it may take a while for this to settle in. Personally I usually notice it after 3-4 hours. For example, I tried a new power cord, and thought, wow, this sounds much more dynamic, but after spending an evening with the stero playing lightly in the background, I found an added edginess that irked me after a long while.
