From his brief description of the circuit I would guess that it is a single ended class A amp with an output coupling cap.Similar to the Zen design from Nelson Pass.The output cap must charge up when the power is first turned on.This makes the pop.Add a relay to open the path to the phones and a 100 ohm resistor to ground that is in circuit all the time so the cap can charge up before the relay pulls in.
