Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |
|
I just had a wonderful phone conversation with Stan Warren and I want to reaffirm what others have said about what a knowledgeable and personable individual he is.We discussed Link DAC tweaks and general circuit tweaks and he was very open with information - obviously short of giving me any of his trade secrets, of which I wouldn't share if he did, but he did pass on a couple of useful tidbits to me that I will share.
He said that for digital equipment, he has found greater benefit from using larger (rated for more amperage) rectifiers rather than simply using ultrafast rectifiers. I would imagine that large fast rectifiers would also be beneficial, but the important thing was the size of the diode, more so than the type...I found this very interesting.
He also spoke very highly of DACT stepped attenuators which I have hear praised before...I might try one of these for a passive pre setup.
We also discussed his mods for the Link DAC. I must say that his knowledge of electronics is excellent and he is doing wonderful things with the Link DAC. It seems that there are great benefits to adding filtering stages to the analog outputs at the op-amps, or replacing the op-amps entirely with a different type of gain circuit. He directed me to the Analog Devices handbook, Burr Brown and LT have similar - these are full of useful cookbook circuits utilizing their own IC's. Obviously, you could use anyones IC's, but there is a wealth of information in them. I am not sure how to get a copy of one of these, but I am sure that contacting the mfr. would be the best place to start.
Basically, Stan answered my probing with an atlas and a compass rather than detailed instructions...that is really right on IMHO!
If you are considering having Stan do some mod work for you, I would encourage you to do so. Stan is a very knowledgeable and is just a great guy.
Okay, so now I have a lot of ideas and have to go home and do some tweaking...
Speaking of which...a tubed output for the Link DAC would sure be a neat thing...hmmmm...
