The first audiophile system I listened to was at Caltech with David Boyk. He taught a music/EE class and had an audiophile system in a basement room. His speakers were the NHT 3.3s and they were absolutely impressive.I think your problem might be that you're using solid state (Classe). The Caltech audio lab at the time had The Mastering Lab tube monoblocks ($5k?, no longer available) and they were pretty darn good. You might want to look into tube equipment for yourself.
FYI they were also using a passive preamp and an older (but expensive, quality) Yamaha DAC via glass optical.
