The first audiophile system I listened to was at Caltech with David Boyk. He taught a music/EE class and had an audiophile system in a basement room. His speakers were the NHT 3.3s and they were absolutely impressive.

I think your problem might be that you're using solid state (Classe). The Caltech audio lab at the time had The Mastering Lab tube monoblocks ($5k?, no longer available) and they were pretty darn good. You might want to look into tube equipment for yourself.

FYI they were also using a passive preamp and an older (but expensive, quality) Yamaha DAC via glass optical.
