Even with low-dropout regulators, you'd need about 14 volts from the batteries to get 12 volts, and it's a tossup which would have the lower output impedance. Series regulators have to drop a couple of volts across the output transistor; just about can't get around that
electronic fact of life.I'd just use the batteries, with local bypassing caps; batteries do
have an internal impedance and 'dry' cells are significantly higher than a 'wet' cell, usually.
