I wouldn't have believed such a simple and straight forward question could elicit such "incredible" responses! While it is true that replacing the pot is the ideal solution, it must be remembered that different people have varying levels of technical competence. If somebody is not proficient with a soldering iron, then I believe simply cleaning the existing pot WITH THE CORRECT CHEMICALS (it’s not like they’re hard to find!!!!) will do the job quite well. I’m not sure how many "repairs" like this I’ve done (many times it was simply done as a service to the customer as part of a more complex repair), but it would be in the hundreds.
Unfortunately it is true that after each time you clean the pot you can expect an increasingly shorter time period before you will have to clean it again, however in the first instance you will probably find that cleaning is quite satisfactory. Be sure to really "flood" the pot with the cleaning spray, otherwise, as suggested by another inmate, you will simply move the impurities around. Oh, it may sound like stating the obvious but I’ve seen worse, have the equipment switched OFF while you’re doing this.
Replacing the pot at this stage is a bit like changing your engine in your car because it’s due an oil change! Eventually you will have to change it (if something else hasn’t failed first), but try this first.
Cheers
Pete
