I think both options are classed as "active x-over" although of course the 2nd is not an active filter. I see what your thinking about, but a linkwitz riley filter is only relevant as a LP/HP pair otherwise its just another low pass filter, with a different delay from the HP filter. You could consider a Linkwitz Riley pair or perhaps figure 9 in the datasheet below. If you put a small cap in series with an amp input it will work fine, but you must know the input impedance to work out fc. If the input resistor is poor so is your filter.
I dont know if there is software yet that will allow you to calculate delay equalisers to add onto a LP filter. You could then have a flat delay well into cutoff. All you then need is to position the bass drivers closer to the listener than the MF/HF array by the right distance, have a gentle 6dB slope on the HP filter, and hey presto! genuinely integrated transients! I did start exploring this a while back but I haven't the time to see it thru.
