Even though I have a router, and other tools, I used a skillsaw/sabresaw type of electric saw, with a wood blade, and marked out the circle and cut it free hand after drilling a starting hole.Often, you can get your wood cut at a lumberyard or hardware store if you ask to have it cut when you buy it (or keep your receipt for later). There is usually a nominal fee, but it is not too much, and they do prevent you from cutting yuour fingers off, while usually doing a decent job.
