You can spend as much as you want, just depends on what features you want to get. Digital multimeters these days are pretty much like Swiss Army knives: lots of functions beyond the basic voltage, current and resistance ranges.Features I find handy are: diode/transistor checker, capacitance range, frequency counter and logic level indicators. Some will do
leakage/gain checks for transistors. One thing I really lack on my
test bench is a milliohmmeter for checking solder connections and
relay contacts, but that really requires a four-wire connection.And/or you can pay for additional digits/accuracy. I'd recommend all
of the above plus a minimum of four digits. Five digits will probably
strain your budget a bit and probably isn't needed for general work.Radio Shack will have a selection of good meters. Fluke and Tektronix
are two of the better-quality instrument makers.--Damon
