As I said before, is the treble very boosted and the bass very week? Until you answer that question, you won't know if you need a phono stage or not.Basically when a record is "cut" the bass level of the signal is lowered and the treble is boosted (the frequency response looks like a ramp starting at the bass and rising all the way to the top octave, as oppose to a perfectly level line). This is done for two reasons:
1) If the bass was recorded at actual level and cut onto the record, the groove modulations would be too large, which would cause side effects; one being the stylus would actually pop out of the groove and another being the record might not be thick enough to "hold" the groove.
2) By boosting the treble in recording, and then reducing during playback, this minimizes the level of surface noise that you hear.So basically, what a phono stage does is give gain (what you call "volume") to the week signal coming from your cartridge, boosts the bass and cuts the treble (the exact inverse of the recording process) according to RIAA specifications.
