Paul,For me it would depend on how easily I could obtain parts to restore the item in question. Some gear uses (fairly) common components or has lots of aftermarket upgrades available;(Dyna ST-70). OTOH, many peices use "unobtainium" class devices (output transistors in my SA-12 for example) making restoration both difficult and $$$$. Personally, I only buy gear I intend to listen to, so the cost of restoring would be limited to my bottom line ($$$$) rather than the (percieved) collectable value of that piece.
Bottom line: if you can buy a primo example of the tuner you desire for X and the cost to buy and restore a sim. item is nearly the same, I'd opt for the primo item and spare myself the work! Good luck!!
