I would just keep taking manageable bites - one at a time. Take a bite, take a time to understand what it means and how it works, then go next step. If you try to cover too much in one shot it is easy to get confused about how the pieces interact.For example, when covering the output stage, it is perhaps less important to pick out the "best" device. If IS important to make the device that you had chosen work, whatever device that might be. I would stay with what you have, but try to understand exactly what is there and why and how.
This way your questions would be more specific and pointed and that would make it easier for folks here to provide good advice.
I would certainly keep "screwing around".
