I used 2N4401-3 transistors in the Levenson JC-1, in 1973. The Leach design is a close approximation of my early Levinson designs. There are quieter parts, but they are difficult to purchase. Typical 'low noise' parts, such as the 2N5210 are more noisy at low impedances, because they have an Rbb'(extra base resistance) of between 100-300 ohms. The 2N4401-3 devices are usually about 40 ohms. Beware of fake 2N4401-3 devices that are re-labeled 2N2222-2N2907 geometry. I would buy Motorola if I could.
