Re: Best transistors

***The Motorola data book specifies these as low noise transistors. When I

ratio was improved by about 4 dB. "

Do you think that 2N4401/2N4403 transistors would give better results if i
put them in place of BC550/BC560 in a phono pre?

That all depends on what you are trying to do. The 4403's are like many other 4 cent parts - you sort of get what you pay for. Some batches from some vendor might be quiet, others might be noisy as hell. The fact that the noise "improved by 4dB" means very little -this is well within normal variations for these cheap garder veriety parts.

So you can select quiet ones from cheap parts, or you can go with true low noise parts of which there are many. They DO specify their noise performance and they cost more, but not too much for a home project.

In short - guaranteed performance is available and it cost some. Some low noise parts are actually not too expensive at all.

If I were building a phono preamp for myself, I would get some true low noise parts, where noise densities are well specified over range of frequencies, so there is no surprise in the 1/f range or whatever.
