IMHO IGBT betters many older FET and my guesstimate is that given in time it will dominate the market where bipolars used to roam some decades ago.Aside from IGBT the followings are worth considering: UHC FETs, SITs, etc. Many companies in Japan is still currently working hard on developing these. Companies such as Hitachi,Sanken,Toshiba,Toshin, JRC, etc. just to name a few.
I didn't know IR has abandoned IGBTs. Perhaps the market isn't "right" for them yet? I'm not sure. Of course I have no way to verify this as well.
Tubes will always have a position in my heart no matter what. Given in time eventually FET amps may come to very close in terms of sound one day.Quest (from Bottlehead)
