My experience is that more output devices typically add up to worse sound. This is probably due to the greater amount of mismatch on commercial designs.I do believe that "old time" iron core transformers deliver better bass performance. Depending on how high your crossover frequency is, the 900 VA toroidal transformer should work fine. You've got a ton of filter capacitance to help buffer momentary surges, so that shouldn't be a problem.
One thing that i would suggest though would be to stagger the sizes of the filter caps. Using all of one size will degrade sonics and transient response. This is especially true if they are all very high value, as they are much slower to charge and discharge. While this is much more noticeable on high frequencies in a full range system, it does make a difference on sub amps also. Bass will tend to have better definition and punch in the upper octave or so.I wouldn't build these with using them only as sub amps in your mind. Why limit their potential uses in the future ? Build them the best possible and it can only benefit you in the long run. Take your time and enjoy the process. Sean
