Side panels would have to be quite substantially wide and large to effectively extend the bass response before self-cancellation occurs, with any reasonable sized wings, the mid-bass would be emphasized (which would make them sound more like amny box speakers.

There are two approaches to increasing planar speakers bass response.

Over-the-Top methods #1:
construct a very large 'coffin' sized enclosure as wide as the speaker, and about 2 1/2 3 feet deep, as tall as the neclosure, and fill with rock wool or Miraflex fiberglass, seal against the back with foam weatherstripping tape, and enjoy vastly increased bass response.

With a well constructed box, heavily braced, and fully stuffed, there is virtually no box responances, or boxy sounds.

Method #2:
Place a resistive bass trap directly behind the speaker, preferrably the full height (two stacked). These can be the DIY kinds.

This will improve bass response quite nicely, as you are absorbing partially the back wave before it can cancel the front wave.
It will work better than wings, but not as good as method #1.
