Re: TWEAKS - WHAT SOUND-CARACTERISTIC DO DIFFERENT TWEAKS HAVE???

Hi! I've done a lot of amp changes in the past both to Hafler and Adcom amp's. I've tweeked just about everything I own come to think of it.
In the days of my first tweek I had a hafler pre-amp and later power amp as well. I bi-amped with a sony amp to a pair of three ways that I had made in a couple of old boxes. The first tweek was to the pre-amp in order to stop a gound loop they had designed into it. It worked great, so I asked myself what else could I do? Next it was more filtering in the power supply. Then, better ground traces on the board. By removing the solder mask I was able to solder a wire on top of the power and ground traces to make them much heavier. Also I matched every componet in the pre-amp. That is if a resistor was 10.045 K ohms in one channel then it was made the same in the other. 2ND HD goes down when you do stuff like that. The Hafler power amp got the most changes. First star ground and filters. Them matced 1% resistors. Later cas-coded front end which added four trasistors to the circuit. Also voltage regulators for the front stages, followed by seperating of the front end and driver stages from the power supply rail of the output stage. More filtering was added at each output device. That was four large caps, one in each corner of the amp. All the wiring was done with litz type wire, made of 30ga wire. Gold connectors were used. It all helped! But what it really said was this, "you have to pay attention to every stage of everthing in your system!" You can't expect to find a golden pre-amp or power amp or speaker, that is going to suddenly bring the Magic! You have to tweek your system from the front to the back, up and down, nothing is to small to be over looked. Do your whole system but don't get caught up in the sound of caps until your speaker are done or your power amps or your preamp or your front end. Do you see what I'm saying? I worked for years to prefect my bobwire interconnects. I went through 26 differant models, before I got too what i wanted in the #27. I had magic in many models but I had other things to fix along the way to be able to hear the differances. I also had to learn to hear! I had to learn to Listen Through a lot of equipment to hear what this or that was really doing. I had to wait to stuff to warm up too. If you turn your system on and its cold your get a differant answer than when its warmed up. Cable even need to charge, their version of warming up. Just remember Nothing is sacred! Give it all a good looking over. Do the big stuff first, like all your power supplies, they'll let other things show through. Get rid of slow op-amps and by-pass like crazy! Every circuit whats to feel it's the only thing on the power supply. Have fun and Good Luck, good listening too! bobwire
