Using solid wood can cause cracking problems because the end grain expands with changes in humidity at a different rate than the side grain. Solid wood is also more resonant and would require more bracing. Stick with MDF, high-grade plywood, or a combination of the two. I've seen comments highly recommending the North Creek Music Cabinet Handbook, so you might want to get a copy of that. I also recommend that you drop by the discussion board at Madisound(www.madisound.com) and ask there. That's the most informative speaker building site I've run across.
