Re: DIY rollers Block Question: Are the wood blocks under the spoon important? What are their function?

Instead of using spoons, buy some Concave Cabinet Knobs. If your in the US, it can be had at Home Depot or HomeBase. The HomeBase models are better, bigger and smoother. Other DIYers have also used Pyrex concave dishes.

If you get the knobs, you will have several options on doing the base.

One option is to buy wood at least 1" inch thick and 2"-3" wide. Then simply cut a block that will fit the knob and cut a 3/8" hole at the center. The knob can just be inserted as is or you can glue them in. The wood option will not give you any extra dampening, since the wood is rigid.

A better option is to find a large rubber grommet, or any rubber material for that matter(toilet rubber material comes to mind). I was lucky to find some in my local electronics store that were about 2" diameter and at least 3/4" thick. Rubber will give you better dampening.

Another option is to just cut off the extension with a hacksaw and you will be left with just the concave face. Now the face itself will not be very stable and would need further modification. The easiest way to stabilize the face is to find an O-ring that matches the diameter of the bottom lip of the knob face. I couldn't find any so I used some Screen Spline (rubber wire used in securing window screen), cut them to size and simply super glued them. Probably less dampening since there isn't much rubber there, but this gives you a very sleek profile, usefull if you don't have enough shelf space.

A better option is to make a small box for each knob face. Then fill it with sand. I have tried all of the above except the sand box idea.

Another option is to RB the whole shelf. Which leads to the extreme option.

The extreme of this is to integrate multiple dampening/decoupling/mass loading techniques. I mean using airbladders ontop of a sandbox then a shelf with RollerBlocks on top of vibrapods then a slab of concrete on top of the component for mass loading. Sounds Nuts............do a search I think someone here is actually doing just that(and he complains that his CDP bounces all over the place).

Good Luck
