Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

I am going to plunge into kit audio this weekend (Assemblage ST40) and have been practicing soldering on some junk boards. I've got a few basic questions.
1. When establishing a mechanical conenction between the part and the board, am I correct in assuming that you first make a 90 degree bend in the lead, insert the component into the board and then use pliers to bend the leads outward for mechanical fit?
2. How high off the board should a component be. I know hot parts should be 1/4inch off the board, but what about others? Does it matter?
