I own a tubed preamp that runs 6922's, and I've auditioned 12ax7 tubed preamps and owned tube amps that run 12ax7's, and both tube types can offer great sound. I myself prefer 6922's, but be aware that some 6922 tube brands, most notably Amperex, have a tendency to go microphonic (I had a pair of NOS Amperex white label PQ's go microphonic after about 300 hours of play time).
