There was a similar thread about this on the Computer Audio forum last week that you might find informative. If you look you'll find that the OP found a couple of 2.1 gaming systems for under $300. I have not heard them, so I will hold my tongue. Link below.My opinion is that you should be able to find a pair of tolerable desktop speakers for under $300. I would recommend taking a look at Audioengine (active) or the DIY Kanspea or MarkAudio kits (passive) from Madisound. If you want to add a sub, I think you need to double your budget. Just my opinion.
