RE: ALL those rooms look problematic

You're generally on the right track, but your specifics are off. A handclap echo isn't directly related to reverberation. Rather, it's the result of a repetitive echo between two parallel surfaces, generally hard, flat, surfaces. It's termed "flutter echo". Depending on the size of the surfaces, it can be heard in a very narrow area, or a broader area. This is a specific problem which is different from overall room reverberation. The problem can be resolved by: Treating one or both of the offending surfaces with absorption at the necessary frequencies, by placing diffusing material or objects on one or both of the offending surfaces - again at the necessary frequencies, or by re-orienting one or both surfaces so that they are no longer parallel. Re-orienting the surfaces will generally be the least detrimental to the overall reverberant character of the room, but may not be practical, depending on the surfaces involved.

Regarding general room treatments to improve overall reverberation characteristics, it's essential to understand that different treatment types will affect different frequency ranges. This holds for both absorption and diffusion. "... thick carpets, tapestries, drapes, and overstuffed cloth-upholstered furniture..." may or may not be the right solution, although some amount of those will be helpful at some frequencies.

A couple of useful resources to start with are F. Alton Everest's "Master Handbook of Acoustics" (a very readable book) and ASTM International at https://www.astm.org/c0423-22.html.

I should note that personal taste, type of music, and typical volume level all play important roles in how a room should be, acoustically. Sometimes, a more "dead" room may be desirable, and sometimes, a more "live" room is preferable.
