MINIRIG 3

I bought a pair of Minirig 3 speakers plus a subwoofer to use for camping and around the yard:

They're about 4" diameter and 3" high. They can be paired for stereo, which was my #1 requirement. Having separate L&R speakers makes a huge difference. The sound quality of the Minirig 3 is a step above other speakers in their size range. However, they do get beamy in the top octave, so the treble can be a little hot if they're pointed straight at you. And if you lay them on their back and listen off-axis, the top octave can be rolled off. The manufacturer has tried to find a compromise between the two placements, which you can tune with the equalizer in their phone app or by propping them up at an angle.

They can play surprisingly loud and clear for their size, they are splash proof and can survive a drop, and they have long battery life, around 50 hours between charges for me. All of that makes them particularly good for outdoor use, especially if you add the subwoofer. You can use a single sub with a single speaker (1.1), a single sub with a stereo pair (2.1), or two subs with two speakers (2.2) if you really need to max out the volume.

If that's too big, there is also a Minirig Mini, which is truly pocketable:

Downsides of the Mini vs. 3 are shorter battery life and little bass without the optional sub.

All of the Minirigs come with protective sleeves with a cable storage pouch. A pair of Minis in their pouches would take up less space in your luggage than the Bose. A pair of the Minirig 3s would take up a little more space, but would still be easy to travel with.

Another option I strongly considered was the Denon Envaya DSB-250. It looked like a killer speaker but reports of premature battery failure scared me off. I also considered the JBL Xtreme 2. It's got a noticeable bass peak when used indoors, but outside it should do well.
