"What the hell do you do with data about VC length, plate thickness, T/S, etc? WHAT????? Tell me? Design your own box? That's about ut, because this stuff is MEANINGLESS when it comes down to decided on which subwoofer to buy. That's right, academic, twiddle-dumb, mightly bs MEANIGNLESS."Many manufactures make false claims about products and these can easily be determined by modeling the woofer and enclosure. For example, and this is just an example not a statement related to VMPS, if you look at the Yamaha subwoofers in Crutchfield they will state frequency response of say 20Hz to 200Hz. However if you listen to one you will say there is not 20Hz output. How come? Because where most manufacturers state their low end response as the -3dB point, Yamaha actually uses the -10dB point. Their -3dB point is up above 30Hz.
"When it comes down to it, the only IMPORTANT data is
*does it go low enough for you
*does it do so with low enough distortion for you
*if it's passive, will the efficiency work for you
*can you cross it over successfully
*is the enclosure size OK
*can you afford it"Yes, agreed, however if you do not have a chance to buy different subwoofers and compare in your living room, the next best thing is to model their responses and compare. All about making an educated decision and not becoming a victim to a salesman. Does it go low enough? Model the enclosure and find out, don't just take the word of someone who just wants to make a sale. Does it do so with low enough distortion? Well you can model the excursion of the driver, vent velocity in a ported enclosure, etc. These relate directly to distortion and you can model at which levels distortion will become audible. If one subwoofer will be able to do 100dB at a certain frequency when distortion becomes audible, and another will do 110dB at the same level before it becomes audible, then which would you choose? Is the enclosure size ok, and can you afford it? yes those are important, but what if you can find two woofers with similar size enclosures and similar price? How do you choose between the two if you can't listen to both in your home? Do you buy from the salesman that tells you better things about his subwoofer? No, you could model the two enclosures, see the differences between the two, and make an educated decision.
"Unless, of course, you true intent is to gather the data so that you can actually make you own stinking box. In which case, you're being DISHONEST."
I have no intention of copying a VMPS design. Suboofers i build based on Lambda Acoustics drivers, and the drivers we will soon be releasing made by TC Sounds are in a whole different league from what VMPS uses. That is not meant as any disrespect to VMPS either. The true dishonesty is when a company makes claims about it's products but will not produce the numbers to back it up.
