If you are going to have a very low crossover point the advantage is small. I have 2 subs crossed over at around 30 hz and there isn't much difference between 1 and 2. Having 2 lets me keep the volume on each one a little lower so the distortion is theoretically lower but there isn't much audible difference. The effects of room modes in this narrow band are pretty small in my situation. The difference in slam and imaging isn't substantial. If you are going to crossover at 80 or 100 hz the difference is larger. You would probably still be better off with 1 sub and a digital equalizer than with 2 subs.
