Amps for ESL-57s?

64.253.163.66

I have been a happy (original) Quad owner for 28 years (man, I'm old!). I've tried a number of different amps. I'll list the ones I've tried and what I think of them, and I'd like your opinions on which ones are best and why. I run them crossed over at 90 Hz through an electronic crossover, which I highly recommend (they play much louder).

Power amp section of Scott 272 -- pretty darn good. Nothing really wrong, but not as good as...

Scott 299B -- not enough power but audio nirvana! I've got two of them now and am going to try to parallel them one of these days for 3 dB more power or lower impedance, whichever sounds better. That crappy-looking dead-stock 299B is a killer amp!

Pioneer M22 series 20 30 watt class A power amp -- blech! No dynamics!

Heathkit WM-5Ms -- okay, but not all that good. Probably need a tune-up and rebias. No real life, not as good as the 272, even, which surprised me.

JVC M7050 (remember that thing?) Sounds good except, like all other solid state power amps I've tried, no dynamics.

Fisher 400 receiver -- not good. No punch, no control, worst-sounding tubed amp I've tried on the quads.

Now, your experiences and recommendations? Cheap is good, good sound is better!
