Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: A little more info

I have heard them driven successfully in a small room with a pair of Audio Note P4SE parallel SET amps. Now these only deliver about 18 watts of power but it was plenty to get moderately loud in a small room. The reason why I mention them is because the sound was quite "alive" even at pretty low volumes. Part of that "alive" character has nothing to do with the speaker and everything to do with the amps. Now Ayre is generally not too bad but I have heard maggies only come alive at lower levels with top flight tube amplification.

Coming alive at low levels is obviously not a power issue it is a dynamics and tonal balance issue. The Maggies in general are not the most lively at low levels but this can be exacerbated by using amplification that itself is a little "dead" sounding. Using a very alive sounding amp like a really good SET amp or OTL amp can do the trick (I heard the same maggie 1.6 sound great as well with OTL monoblocks). Both of these amps love flat impedances, even if it is a bit on the low side the flatness is more important.

If you really want to change speakers though I would say look into the Avantegard Solo. It is self-powered and compact with VERY high sensitivity so it will work well at low volumes.
