The best small floorstanders I've heard include various Audionote models ranging in price from about $4,000 to $20,000. They are all about the same size, but the higher-priced models are more refined. These are very warm, lively, and musically engaging speakers, quite different from a lot of audiophile speakers that are extremely wideband, detailed, free of obvious resonances, etc., but sound dull, lifeless and unengaging.A bit on what I consider the "audiophile' side, but still quite musical sounding is the Gryphon Cantata. It is amazing how much volume, bass extension and weight that these small floorstanders are capable of providing. They too are pricey (probably more than $15,000 given the state of the dollar).
Another speaker to consider is the Gradient Revolution. This is a compact, nice-looking and versatile floorstander that can be altered in configuration to match room location. I heard it in a small room at CES, placed close to the front wall and it did a very good job in that location at projecting an airy, spacious and natural sounding soundstage. I believe the speaker was priced somewhere around $4,000, but the setup I heard would involve a lot more money (biamplified and utilizing the Rives room equalizer).
