Half the problem is people who put down a bass player or other musician often haven't heard the musician's best stuff. I view Entwistle as the best ever on electric bass, regardless of genre. RIP.

Most bass players that have been touted as great often have a unique pet sound or riff. The ones I view to be great are endless in thier style. Entwistle and Wooton are my favorites.

J is very right too. It's hard to play good bass without a songwriter. The most frustrating thing our band is having. There are a lot of really good band musicians, but so few good songwriters. The vast majority of good players never make it because they were not fortunate to link up with a good songwriter. A lot of people can play the great guitar riffs, drum fills and basslines off recording, but never knew someone who could write an original song that would enable the talent to make it to the next level.
