In fairness to the rock bassists, I'd say that's partially because 'bass solos' work better in jazz than in rock, where, to my ears, bass should generally be approached as a rhythmic instrument that shouldn't be the focus of a solo or played like a guitar.

On the other hand, those players that don't share my view deserve to be on the receiving end of yr comment.

I'll always view rock as a genre that mostly works best as one where the focus is in the ideas expressed within the parameters of songwriting first, instrumental ability second.
