Stills voice used to be great - honest, easy going, raspy with a hint of Louisiana - especially when doing solo acoustic stuff. He started to decline in the late 70's and finally sounds overweight and bellowing at times on "Man Alive", a recording I can usually not listen to in its entirety. Dylans voice is gone as well, but I think he works with the limitations in his voice better.I too am a huge Stills fan. The performed the best during the early years with Buffalo Springfield and CSNY, Manassas, Stills-Young Band and that spectacular 2nd side of Stills Live (my favorite Stills work). I like the playing and minimalist idea behind Stills Alone, but the electronic effects on his acoustic guitar sound lifeless and anemic - not the deep woody Martin sound he worked so well on 4+20, Black Queen, Crossroads, etc.
I've always been of the opinion that Stills was the most technically capable musician in CSNY, but he seemed to hit the proverbial writers block which limited him as a solo artist. Overall, he seemed to produce much better work with others than on his own.
That is way cool that you were present and next to the giggling fools during Black Queen. Funny how just worked that line into the song the way he did. I love that live recording of the song which you attended. I just received a 4 Way Street CD for Xmas which includes this track. Previously I got this from the 4 CD CSNY box set.
