...and being unoriginal.It might just be original to develop/employ/be inspired by or *quote* source material and meld it into something uniquely one's own. (Steal from the best I say. We're talking pop music here, very fine pop music but stil...)
I love Steely Dan...at least the first four albums worth. Brilliant songwriters.
Fist time I saw them they were bottom of the bill to Uriah Heep and T Rex - you can imagine how they went over. They still emplyed a lead singer at the time. But I thought they were pretty darned special.
