Re: F#$% Steely Dan.

"...the downhill slide started w/ Aja"

Steely Dan is made up of excellent musicians and songwriters. Their mixture of jazz and rock will appeal to different listeners - well differently. The ones that like the jazzy Steely Dan also tend to also like the solo Fagen material.

The earlier releases had seemed to have their strongest rock foundation, while jazz influences become more prominent with the later releases. I always admired their musicianship and jazz rock blend. For me, Countdown to Ecstacy was easily the best release followed by Can't buy a Thrill. I also thought Royal Scam was strong, but Katy Lied and Gaucho were a bit of a drop off for me but still enjoyable. Two Against Nature was a pretty good release, though very jazzy, as was Everything Must Go. The latter I didn't enjoy as much, but both were good enough that I'm very interested in new releases.

I thought Aja was actually a resurgence of sorts for this band - one of their best releases where they made their jazzy sound more accessible to listeners that were not necessarily jazz lovers. When it was originally released when I was in high school, I remember it being a really fresh set of tunes that got a lot of time in rotation with me and my compadres at that time.
