was Kris Kristofferson's wise advice to Sinead O'Connor at the Bobfest many years ago. It is wise advice in dealing with the continual hijacking of popular songs for use in commercial settings - be it commercials, TV programs or films - that have NOTHING to do with the music being used, EXCEPT some ad exec has convinced some client that the music will help brand and sell the product...Led Zeppelin doing Cadilac commercials? I think it makes Led Zep a LOT less "hip" than it makes Cadilac "hip". Iggy Pop doing "Lust for Life" for a cruise line? Sad...but you know what? When I listen to those songs to LISTEN to those songs, I still enjoy them and sure as hell don't even think of any commercial they've been used in. They won't ruin the music of MY youth in this fashion, but they sure can annoy me for 30 or 60 seconds at a time...
"how can I make them stop ruining the music of my youth?" You can't. Just shine it on and DON'T support/buy the products that particularly offend your sensibilities regarding this matter. It's a bummer that so many great songs have been corrupted/compromised to sell all the crap that's for sale in this world, but that's life. It's all about the money - like Jimmy Page, Paul McCartney or Pete Townshend need more of it...
