Loved that album in grade nine, when sound quality really didn't matter. I only heard the Max's album once or twice and I don't own it so I can't really comment on the sound. I actually find the crappy sound on 1969 kind of endearing, not really offensive, sounds like he's playing in my basement, with about as many people there as could fit in my basement. Reminds me of a time I was with some friends cruising around looking for something to do, came across this little club called The Cat's Paw, my friend double parked while I ran in to see who was playing, ended up being a local band called Deja Voodoo, there was no one in the club but for a couple of guys setting up the equipment, I asked what time the band was going on, and one of the guys answered back; "What time can you be here?"
