After a bit of digging, I have realised trhat I can point you at information and samples and let you decide...
The Black Eyed Susans.www.blackeyedsusans.com.au
This was originally a holiday gig fro Dave McComb and others which then took on a life of its own. If you read the biog you will see that at one point 3 of The Triffids were in the band. Also Warren Ellis of Dirty Three and Nick Cave's band who deserves a post all of his own. Definitely read the biog to get an idea how they developed.
My Friend The Chocolate Cake.

A band which grew out of Not Waving Drowning and more or less run by David Bridie who is, and I am hesitant to make this comparison, a sort of Aussie Peter Gabriel.
On their site you will find plenty of info about their other activities, projects etc.
There are some live downloads of which More Heart Than Me is my favourite song, done here with a very sparce arrangement.
I like these folks very much bu they will do an album and tour and then go their separate ways for another 2 years doing other stuff.
I just pulled The Chocolate Cake's Curious album out and this is where I would start. Its a wonderful heartwarming record.
As you are approaching The Blackeyed Susans from The Triffids direction, I think All Souls Alive is a good place to start as its got the strongest Dave McComb involvement and some tremendous songs. If you read through you will see this has really been a supergroup of a certain section of Australian Music. The scene here is small and a lot of people don't even manage to make a living. While that is criminal, it also means they make music because they want to do it, need to do it, and the music tends to shine because of that. This country has been ignored for so long it has developed without the pressures that would have happened in the USA or Britain.
Oh by the way, Sydney is probably not the best place to start looking for bands as many if not most prefer Melbourne. These days (since the end of the neo-fascistic regime 15 or 20 years ago (no overstatement, the state premier actually considered ceding from Australia to become a white only state...) Brisbane has started to grow into itself and is developing a healthy scene of its own.
OK, that's probably enough for one message. Next it will be time for The Go Betweens, Brisbane's finest and recently ended band following the death of Grant McLennan.www.go-betweens.net
That should keep you busy for an evening!
I hope the docyor's appointment was OK.
Dave
