Dave Davies "Kinked"

This collection really hits the high points of Dave Davies' solo work over the past 10 years (particularly the great Unfinished Business CD + Live at the Bottom Line + Bug) + a good song he recorded while recovering from a recent stroke ("God in My Brain")+ a nice cover of George Harrison's "Give Me Love, Give Me Peace on Earth." The focus is on his own mid-tempo elegaic ballads, which dove nicely with rerecordings of vintage Kinks ballads from B flipsides, Something Else, Lola/Moneyground, and the earlier Pye period. With this collection Dave makes a good case for being considered the Keeper of the Flame of the more lyrical, sweeter side of the Kinks.

As remarked by Bill Crowley in the liner notes: "Dave's guitar work, once described as a pure expression of teenage id, was a progenitor of punk, metal (and the entire genre of rock guitar, for that matter)... the ringing acoustic and the lyrical electric."

As evidenced by his post-Kinks solo work, one can now regard Dave as also the spiritual seeker of the band, perhaps similar in this role to George Harrison within Beatles. Of his stroke and the song "God in My Brain" he writes: "It's not God the grey-haired old man sitting in the sky, but the person in my head who while the stroke was happening was sitting back and observing."

Got to have it, particularly if you don't already have Unfinished Business.

Dave
