I'm 65 yers old, and I do listen to bands/artists who are more current. Here are some examples...
Steven Wilson - This guy is the Todd Rundgren of the modern era. He writes, performs and is a very good engineer who has done many surround mixes of albums by Jethro Tull, XTC, Yes, King Crimson, KISS, Roxy Music, Tears For Fears, Chicago, and Gentle Giant with more to come. He has also been a producer on albums by heavy metal band, Opeth and former Marillion vocalist, Fish. Steven came into the public conscious via his band Porcupine Tree, and he has a solo career going as well. He's also been involved in other musical partnerships, such as the group Blackfield. The music well is deep with this guy. Good places to start would be the Porcupine Tree albums Stupid Dream, Lightbulb and In Absentia. As for his solo releases Hand. Cannot. Erase. Is quite popular among the fanbase.
Anna von Hausswolff - If your tastes run toward the gothic Anna is your girl. She is from Sweden, and her instrument of choice is the organ (as in, massive church organs) and she is quite the vocalist as well. Ceremony, The Miraculous and Dead Magic are all excellent releases which can all be sampled on YouTube.
The Warning - If your tastes run to straight up hard rocking music then this power trio comprised of three sisters from Mexico is worth checking out. Their most recent album, Keep Me Fed, has a bit of an alternative vibe mixed into the guitar heavy onslaught, but the catchiness of their tunes is hard to deny. Also, they are a very good live band. Again, YouTube is a good source for sampling.
St. Vincent - (aka, Annie Clark). This female artist appeared on my radar a few years ago, and I've been playing catchup since. Her music is a bit more electronic than the artists mentioned above, but it's in service to her tunes-which can be quite eclectic at times. I really like her latest album, All Born Screaming, and I would also recommend her self-titled release from a few years ago as good places to dip your toe in. Again, go to YouTube.
Rival Sons - If you're looking for something a bit more old school then this hard rocking quartet from the USA is a good place to start. Rival Sons opened for Black Sabbath during their last tour in America, and they managed to impress the Sabbath faithful.
