During the winter 1990 quarter, while I was a freshman at UC Santa Cruz, our mascot was the Banana Slug. Students dared each other to kiss a real banana slug. The slime was supposed to taste bitter and numb your lips.
During finals week, I was in my dorm bathroom, brushing my teeth. One of my neighbors was a sophomore. She nudged me, and said, "When the girls come back from spring break, and the weather heats up, they will be frisky."
If you did not clean up, before leaving for break, you had to do so, when you came back. But oh ho ho, Bell Biv DeVoe's distinctive "Poison" was a huge hit. Funny thing was, we giggled at one of our dormmies, Ivy. After BBD's "Poison" came out, everyone brought back the "Poison Ivy" name.
One of our other dormmies either ate something she was allergic to, or brushed up against plants, which caused her to break out in hives. Poison, indeed.
Anyway, BBD were New Edition's Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe. At the end of "Poison," they did give a shoutout to NE's Ralph Tresvant and Bobby Brown. "Poison" freaked out a lot of guys. The guys thought that girls were poisonous, not necessarily in terms of STIs, but relationship-wise. As big of a hit as it was in 1990, BBD's "Poison" is ubiquitous on today's radio.
