Gloria Gaynor, "Never Can Say Goodbye"

Sorry, we don't have photos from the mid-1970s, when we were in preschool in San Francisco. However, our little ears perked up, when we heard Gloria Gaynor's version of "Never Can Say Goodbye."

Originally, when Clifton Davis (Motown) was writing "Never Can Say Goodbye," he had the Supremes in mind. However, the song was given to the Jackson 5, who turned it into a massive hit. And then, in the early-1970s, Isaac Hayes did a cover.

We can't believe it's been 50 years, but yeah, Gloria Gaynor's disco-adapted "Never Can Say Goodbye" is now that old. Gaynor, of course, would reach higher, with "I Will Survive."

When the calendar flipped to 1990, the pop culture of the 1970s made a comeback. In the early-90s, when I was at UC Santa Cruz, a 70s-themed dance played both of Gaynor's "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "I Will Survive."

When I got back to the dorm, I was brushing teeth, when my friend walked in. She had to pee, and, while I was still brushing my teeth, hopped in the shower.

Once in the shower, she unforgettably sang Gaynor's "Never Can Say Goodbye," and said she actually liked it better than "I Will Survive."

Okay, if you want to go a step further, you can check out the Communards' cover of "Never Can Say Goodbye." But as people have forgotten about the Jackson 5 and Isaac Hayes versions, it's Gloria Gaynor's which has been stamped into the public's minds.
